Discussion Paper: Advancing Early Intervention for Bipolar Disorder

While early intervention in mental health is generally deemed to be the right approach, and precedents for early intervention in serious mental illness exist (e.g. Early Psychosis Intervention), there is currently no agreed-upon model for early intervention in bipolar disorder.

With this in mind, the Daymark Foundation partnered with Orygen to explore the question:

How might we advance an early intervention approach for people with or at risk of BD?

Orygen conducted 27 semi-structured interviews with a variety of stakeholders.

The findings from these interviews established the foundation for an in-person, solutions-focused gathering in Lausanne, Switzerland in July 2023.

This discussion paper summarizes the challenges, barriers, and opportunities to an early intervention approach to bipolar disorder, and outlines a set of ideas for advancing this field and practice.
